Story of Pickin' Piper

"She is a best friend, a fur baby, snuggle buddy and secret keeper, but she will be our first four legged hunting buddy together - and she picked us."

I grew up always having a dog, and same with my boyfriend. Once we got our own place, we wanted to get a little something more for us - a puppy. But where we were living at the time said we weren’t able to do that, so our dream was shut down. We actually were seriously thinking about getting a hedgehog.

Yes, a hedgehog. Just something to fill that empty nurturing part wired into us. We did countless hours of research and found a guy who had a liter of hedgehog babies on the way. We emailed him and sent him a deposit for a hedgehog baby.

Weeks passed and the check was cash, but not a single word from this guy. Finally, I emailed him asking him how the babies were, and in his response he said the babies were all stillborn, and that he will refund us our money back...

So no hedgehog.

We then moved into the house we currently live in, and Allen's (my boyfriend) mom decided to get chickens. I was also raised with always having chickens, so I pitched my idea to Allen - “lets get chickens.”

He said no.

We now have 10 chickens.

After a year of having our chickens - we needed MORE. We couldn’t give up wanting a dog. Specifically a German Shorthaired Pointer. One day we sat down and spent hours looking online. Two days after reaching out to a breeder, we finally received a response! The pups were 4 weeks old and depending how they were doing, they could be able to go home at just 6 weeks.

Two days later, got in the truck to go meet our future fur baby.

She picked me. We walked in and the three available pups were slipping and sliding on the hardwood floors, and she wobbled to me. I sat down and played with her and her sisters, but she was constantly coming to me. Finally, Allen leaned down to me and said “Babe, that’s going to be Piper.”

Two weeks later we picked her up and brought her to her forever home. She has taught us more than I think we have taught her, but she is continuously learning and growing new skills every day. She is a best friend, a fur baby, snuggle buddy and secret keeper, but she will be our first four legged hunting buddy together - all because she picked us.
