New Project

During Sturgeon Spearing every year my dad and I talk about what we would do differently if we built a

different shack. After some back and forth we made a bet.

He bet that I wouldn’t build my own shack by next year - I bet that I would.

When someone doubts that I will do something, I make a point to definitely do it, especially when it’s a bet with my old man.

I have a flawless interior design, but here is the problem. I want the shack to not only be used during sturgeon spearing, but also for regular ice fishing. Because lake winnebago gets so much less snow than we get, it’s hard to come up with a happy medium design easy for maneuvering around the lakes up here through the snow. I’m honestly torn between two designs. One is way cheaper to get my hands on. The other is a patented design that nowhere online can you find how they built it.

One is a Tip Down Trailer design, the other is a Drop Down Trailer design.

A Tip Down Trailer is just that, the side of the shack is attached to a trailer and just gets tipped up or down. Problem with that is then your shack can’t be very big.

The Drop Down Trailer is pretty cool. It sits up right on the trailer and can be easily lowered down to the ground (in the case ice) and that’s it.

What’s wrong with building a regular old shack? The travel distance we have between Lake Winnebago and Home. 3 Hours or so of driving with a miniature house on a trailer that's just strapped down...no thanks.

As I said I know what I want for an interior design. Two benches on both sides, a wood stove, small windows that can be easily covered for spearing, and a coverable hole cut along the far wall for jigging or spearing. On Facebook I’m a part of several different fishing group pages, and sturgeon spearing pages. I asked what everyone's opinion was, what their mistakes were when they built a shack, and what they would change for their current shack.

So many people said that a drop down trailer - though it is expensive, is worth the money. Others swear by their tip down trailers.

I’m not sure what I will decide, but I am really excited to win this bet against my old man.

I will be keeping you all posted on the latest victories, failures, and stories in the process of this adventure. Allen can say goodbye to the garage for now, it’s my turn to work on a project!
